The 27-year-old World Cup winner was ruled out of the match as a precaution, with Real taking no risks on their top goalscorer. Despite his absence, the Blancos secured a 2-1 win at Santiago Bernabeu, advancing to the last 16.

Arbeloa explained the decision:

“He had to leave training yesterday and has felt discomfort on other days. After consulting the medical team, we decided it was best for him to stop and recover fully. We want him back at 100% and confident for upcoming matches. He’s very important, so we’ll wait and see. Hopefully it won’t take too long.”

When asked if Mbappe’s issue was minor discomfort or a significant injury, Arbeloa said:

“I can’t exactly differentiate between discomfort and an injury. If he stops, it’s because he doesn’t feel comfortable. We hope it’s a minor issue and that he can return in days or weeks. We have a diagnosis, but I’m not the one to disclose medical details. Our priority is for him to recover fully.”

Arbeloa did not have direct communication with Jose Mourinho during Benfica’s trip to Madrid, as the former Real coach served a touchline ban:

“I haven’t seen or spoken with him. I sent greetings through the Benfica staff.”

With European qualification secured, Real Madrid can now focus on La Liga, where they continue a thrilling title race against rivals Barcelona. Their next fixture is at home against Getafe on Monday.
