Neymar climbed into the top 10 of Santos’ all-time scoring list this week after netting twice in a 2-1 Brazilian league victory over Vasco da Gama.
The brace also strengthened his growing support among fans as he pushes for a place in Brazil’s squad for the World Cup.
Thursday’s match marked just his third appearance of the year. The 34-year-old forward has been working his way back after suffering an ACL injury in October 2023 and undergoing further knee surgery in December.
Observers praised not only the two goals but also the manner in which Neymar delivered them. His opener came via a powerful and precise strike from a wide angle, showing greater sharpness than in recent outings. The second followed a driving run before a delicate chip over the goalkeeper.
“Last week some people said I was the worst player in the world,” Neymar told SporTV, referring to a 2-1 loss to Novorizontino in the Sao Paulo state championship. “Today I scored twice and that’s what counts. One day they say you’re finished, the next day they say you should go to the World Cup.”
Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has consistently stated that only fully fit players will be selected for the World Cup. Still, local football figures, commentators and former players are increasingly backing Neymar’s case even if he has yet to reach peak condition.
“I am almost certain he will take Neymar,” former Brazil and Real Madrid coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo told Globo Esporte. “He knows Neymar’s vision and technique will be essential.”
Neymar is now Santos’ 10th highest scorer with 151 goals across two spells at the club. Pelé leads the list with 1,061. Neymar also remains Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer with 79 goals in 125 international appearances.
