This article was originally published in October 2025 and has been revised to highlight Chris Richards’s recent achievement of being named U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year.
Chris Richards, a talented center back from Birmingham, Alabama, narrowly missed out on being a starting defender for the USA at the 2022 World Cup due to an unfortunate injury. Since then, he has quickly risen to prominence, showcasing his skills in the English Premier League and contributing significantly to Crystal Palace's triumphs in both the 2025 FA Cup and the Community Shield. Richards has also made his mark on the international stage, playing 12 matches for the U.S. national team and scoring two goals, including one in the Concacaf Gold Cup final against Mexico in June. At just 25 years old, he has become a vital leader within the team, earning respect and affection from teammates and coaches alike. To provide fans with more insight into his life beyond the pitch, Richards recently shared his story.
Growing Up in Alabama: A Unique Journey to Soccer

Alabama is often recognized for its football culture, but Chris Richards’s journey took a different path. “Back then, there wasn’t a professional soccer team in Alabama,” he recalls. “The closest was in Atlanta, and the highest level we had locally was UAB.” Despite the limited opportunities, he thrived in the youth soccer scene. Competing against teams from Tennessee and Georgia highlighted the significant gap between Alabama and the rest of the South, but it also fueled his passion for the sport. With the emergence of clubs like Birmingham Legion, Nashville SC, and Atlanta United, Richards is delighted to see the growth of soccer in his home state, especially among young players.
The Move to Further His Career

Realizing that staying in Alabama might hinder his aspirations, Richards decided to leave home to pursue soccer more seriously. “I reached out to Luchi Gonzalez at the FC Dallas academy and expressed my desire to try out,” he explains. Initially, he faced rejection but saw it as a stepping stone rather than a setback. “That’s when I moved to Houston at 16, and it was a game-changer for me.” Living with a host family, the Eastons, provided him with a supportive environment during this crucial period of his life. Although he played various positions growing up, he only transitioned to center back when he was around 15 years old.
Balancing Sports and Family Life

Richards's athletic background is deeply rooted in his family. His father was a professional basketball player overseas, while his mother engaged in swimming, soccer, and cheerleading. This diverse sporting influence shaped his early interests. “I was a very energetic kid, which is why my parents enrolled me in an after-school program,” he says. Soccer became his chosen sport, partly because it offered an escape from the pressure of his father's basketball expectations. As he moved away from home at a young age, the emotional impact on his family was profound, especially on his mother. “It was tough for everyone involved, but I knew I had to take this step to achieve my dreams,” he reflects.
Embracing Life in London

Now based in London, Richards appreciates the city’s rich cultural diversity. “The variety of cultures here is something you don’t get in Birmingham,” he notes, highlighting the influences he encounters daily. He enjoys exploring different cuisines, including finding a good Mexican restaurant that he visits weekly. Staying connected to his American roots is important to him, and he often goes to the movies to indulge in that familiarity.
In addition to his professional pursuits, Richards recently embraced fatherhood, which has provided him with a renewed sense of responsibility. “It’s beautiful,” he says, “it’s taught me that your child comes first, and that’s the best thing in the world.” With his sights set on further achievements both on and off the field, Chris Richards continues to inspire many as he navigates his exciting journey in soccer.
