Is Türkiye the New Favorite Over USA to Win Group D?

FIFA World Cup April 20 , 2026 14:33:08 PM

The recent international window has not been kind to the United States men's national team, as their performance left much to be desired. With losses in both friendlies against Belgium and Portugal, the road to advancing to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has become considerably tougher. The entry of Türkiye into Group D adds another layer of complexity to the U.S. team’s challenges. David Mosse elaborated on this topic during the latest episode of "State of the Union," highlighting Türkiye's strong credentials as a formidable opponent.

Türkiye's Rise and Impact

Türkiye secured its spot in the World Cup by defeating Kosovo 1-0 in the final of the 2026 World Cup European playoffs. This victory not only qualified them for the tournament but also allowed them to rise in the FIFA men's world rankings, moving from No. 25 to No. 22. In contrast, the United States experienced a slight decline, dropping from 15th to 16th in the rankings. Mosse emphasized the strength of Türkiye, noting, "They’re a proper team. They reached the quarterfinals of the Euros. The only reason they found themselves in the playoff is due to being in the same group as Spain. I anticipate that this will be a challenging match for the U.S."

While the U.S. won't face Türkiye until the final match of the group stage, this could create additional pressure, especially given their current streak of eight consecutive losses against European teams. The timing of this matchup may complicate the U.S.'s efforts to secure a place in the knockout rounds.

Importance of the Opening Match

Rob Stone pointed out the critical nature of the U.S. team's opening match, stating, "That first game now for the U.S. is absolutely paramount." He stressed that a poor start against Paraguay could spell trouble for the team. "If you stumble out of the gates in L.A. against Paraguay — uh oh. You need to take care of business before facing Türkiye in L.A. to finalize the group stage," he added.

Stone expressed his belief that Türkiye should be considered the favorite to win Group D, predicting they would manage to win their first two matches comfortably. He acknowledged that while the U.S. certainly has the capability to win their games, the odds are stacked against them at this moment. "I think Türkiye is the favorite right now. There’s still plenty of time before the tournament," he noted.

Optimism for the U.S. Team

Despite the challenges ahead, Alexi Lalas remains hopeful about the United States' chances of advancing and possibly winning Group D. "I would put this group up against any other in the past, not just in terms of advancing, but also winning the group," Lalas asserted. He believes that even with the current setbacks, the team can rise to meet the challenge.

However, he cautioned that failing to secure the top spot in Group D would significantly diminish their hopes of reaching the quarterfinals, even with the advantage of playing on home soil. "There is a massive advantage to winning your group," Stone stated. "The path has been laid out, in red carpet fashion, for the U.S. Everything becomes significantly more challenging if they don’t win."

The U.S. will face Türkiye in a crucial group stage match at Los Angeles Stadium on June 25. Lalas welcomed Türkiye to the World Cup enthusiastically, stating, "We welcome Türkiye to the World Cup, we welcome Türkiye, and we want to beat up on them." As both teams prepare for this exciting encounter, much is at stake for the U.S. as they aim to navigate a difficult road to the knockout stage.
