Alphonso Davies was forced to leave the pitch with a hamstring problem during Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga victory over Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.
The pacey full-back pulled his shirt over his face as he exited shortly after the restart, sparking concern about the seriousness of the setback with less than four months remaining before his nation co-hosts the World Cup.
Bayern later confirmed that Davies had suffered a muscle tear in his right hamstring and stated that he “will be unavailable for the time being.”
Despite the injury, Davies was able to walk off the field on his own, and head coach Vincent Kompany initially played down the severity of the issue.
"It doesn’t appear too serious," Kompany said following Bayern’s 3-2 win. "I don’t know if it will be two weeks or four weeks, but I feel it won’t take too long. These things can happen when players are returning from injury. We just hope it’s nothing major so he can get back up to speed again."
Davies has featured only eight times in the Bundesliga this campaign after spending almost nine months sidelined with a serious knee injury picked up while representing Canada in March. The defender tore a ligament and suffered additional damage to his right knee.
Canada will co-host the World Cup alongside the United States and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.
