Canada ended the SheBelieves Cup on a victorious note, bouncing back from a tough stretch and showcasing resilience and emerging talent. After a challenging end to 2025 with a five-game losing streak, the Canadian women’s national team relied on goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan and clutch performances in the penalty shootout to defeat Argentina 3-2 following a scoreless 90 minutes on Saturday.

Goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan was the hero of the match, stopping two key penalties and helping secure Canada’s win. She denied Aldana Cometti and Sophie Braun, while Vanina Preininger missed her shot, sending Argentina out of the tournament. Sheridan’s performance drew praise from Canada coach Casey Stoney, who coached her at the NWSL’s San Diego Wave. “I had no doubt that we would win that penalty shootout. Not a single doubt. I knew she'd save some. She's world-class,” Stoney said. Sheridan’s calm and decisive goalkeeping under pressure reinforced her reputation as one of the top goalkeepers in the sport.

Captain Jessie Fleming, Janine Sonis, and Julia Grosso successfully converted their penalties, with Grosso’s shot slipping just under Argentine goalkeeper Solana Pereyra. Argentina’s scorers included Agostina Holzlieier and Agustina Vargas, while Pereyra denied Jordyn Huitema’s attempt.

Dominant Play During Regulation

Although the match ended 0-0 in regulation, Canada dominated the second half, keeping Argentina pinned in their own half and creating multiple scoring opportunities. The Canadians were aggressive and persistent, forcing the South Americans to commit fouls and employ delaying tactics in hopes of reaching the shootout. Substitute Cloe Lacasse nearly clinched the win in the 89th minute after a brilliant through ball from Fleming, but her shot was blocked by a defender. Coach Stoney noted that her team had eight or nine high-quality chances but couldn’t convert, underscoring the team’s attacking pressure.

Emerging Talent and Future Challenges

Stoney used the tournament to give opportunities to young talent, making seven changes to her starting lineup. Nineteen-year-old Annabelle Chukwu started upfront alongside collegiate star D.B. Pridham, while 18-year-old Kaylee Hunter made her first senior cap from the flank. “Obviously it's a big decision to put young players in from the start in a competitive game like this, but there was no doubt that both of them could go in and compete,” Stoney said. Chukwu, who broke Christine Sinclair’s Canadian youth scoring record, and Hunter both impressed, demonstrating the depth of Canada’s squad.

Looking ahead, Canada will face Brazil, South Korea, and Zambia in April as part of the expanded FIFA Series in Brazil. The team is also preparing for the eight-team CONCACAF W Championship in November, which serves as a qualifier for the 2027 World Cup and 2028 Olympics.
