Manchester United legend Gary Neville has defended the club’s decision to let Casemiro leave at the end of the season, even as the Brazilian midfielder has reasserted himself as a key figure under interim manager Michael Carrick. Despite helping United climb the Premier League table and contributing crucial goals, Neville believes the timing of Casemiro’s departure remains appropriate.
Casemiro Shines as United Push for Champions League
Casemiro has been instrumental in Manchester United’s recent resurgence, including scoring in back-to-back games, most recently in a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa. This win helped United open a three-point gap over Unai Emery’s Aston Villa in the race for third place.

Despite speculation about his departure in previous summers, Casemiro has remained at Old Trafford and started in 13 consecutive Premier League matches. With seven goals so far this season, he has delivered his best scoring output since joining the club.
Even as fans call for the 34-year-old to stay beyond this summer, Neville feels it’s right for both United and Casemiro that the midfielder leaves. Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, Neville praised Casemiro as “an exceptional central midfield player” who played in one of the most dominant midfields in Real Madrid history but emphasized that his current stint at United is akin to a swansong, a final chapter of his illustrious career.
Financial Impact and Investment Concerns
Despite his on-field contributions, Neville also highlighted that Casemiro has been a costly investment that hasn’t provided long-term value. United initially paid £60 million for the Brazilian, with an additional £10 million in add-ons, and he remains one of the club’s highest earners.
Neville criticized United’s recruitment strategy, noting: “They’ve invested £140m in Casemiro, £20m a year in wages, and £60m in a fee, that’s not a clever move because they’re now losing him for nothing.”
While Casemiro has been a vital figure, including scoring in the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle, Neville argues the club’s overspending and poor timing mean that financially, this has not been a successful signing. He stresses that this is a reflection of United’s broader transfer approach rather than a failure on Casemiro’s part.
Casemiro’s Influence on the Pitch Remains Strong
Even in his final months at United, Casemiro has continued to impress. In the victory over Aston Villa, he played a pivotal role alongside Bruno Fernandes, contesting more duels than any teammate and contributing directly to United’s goals. His connection with Fernandes and ability to control the midfield has been a cornerstone of Carrick’s tactical setup.

Defensively, Casemiro ranks among the top holding midfielders in the Premier League for tackles, interceptions, and possessions won. Offensively, he has scored six goals from set-pieces and created multiple scoring opportunities, demonstrating both his versatility and value. Neville also emphasized the intangible benefits of Casemiro’s presence, noting his role as a mentor for younger players like Kobbie Mainoo, helping them absorb critical experience on and off the ball.
Casemiro’s impending departure leaves United with a challenging summer ahead. Neville believes the club will need to sign two midfielders to replace his impact effectively, underscoring how crucial the Brazilian has been in revitalizing the team this season. While he may be leaving, Casemiro ensures that his final performances at Old Trafford are a fitting reminder of his quality and influence.
