Real Madrid TV has entered the debate surrounding the controversial decision to overturn the red card of Barcelona’s Gerard Martín during their La Liga match against Atlético Madrid. This incident has sparked a wider discussion on the consistency of refereeing decisions in Spanish football.

Real Madrid TV’s Stance on Refereeing Inconsistencies

According to the Spanish outlet AS, Real Madrid TV has strongly criticized Spanish refereeing, calling the reversal of Martín's red card a glaring example of double standards. The channel compared this case to the red card given to Real Madrid's Federico Valverde in a previous clash with Atlético Madrid, a decision that stood and saw Valverde miss Real Madrid’s crucial match against Mallorca. This loss, in turn, dealt a major blow to their La Liga title hopes.

In the programme "Real Madrid Conecta," which analyzes ongoing events in football, the hosts questioned why VAR did not intervene in Valverde’s case while it reversed the decision for Martín. The programme highlighted how Valverde's absence in the Mallorca match contributed to Real Madrid's difficulties in their title chase.

The Referees’ Technical Committee and VAR Controversies

Real Madrid TV also focused on the performance of the Referees’ Technical Committee, accusing them of inconsistent officiating. They pointed out the case of Valentín Gómez, who committed a stamp during the 25th round of La Liga that was not penalized with a red card. Though the committee later acknowledged their mistake, they did not apply the same level of scrutiny to the Gerard Martín incident.

The programme went on to highlight statistics revealing the disparity in VAR decisions between Barcelona and Real Madrid. Barcelona benefited from 13 overturned decisions, while Real Madrid only had 3 overturned in their favor. These numbers, according to the programme, suggest a significant imbalance in the application of refereeing decisions.

A Hidden Hand Behind the Decisions?

Journalist Miguel Ángel Muñoz of Real Madrid TV emphasized that when comparing these statistics with the number of red cards awarded and the ongoing Negreira case, it seems there may be an unseen influence affecting refereeing decisions. He expressed a deep distrust of the refereeing system, questioning the role of Mileru López in the VAR room and implying that there is a hidden hand behind the perceived favoritism towards Barcelona.

Muñoz further argued that Real Madrid TV is the only media outlet exposing the lack of seriousness and legality in the current system, which has fueled his skepticism toward Spanish refereeing. In the midst of these discussions, journalist Paul Tenorio also suggested that a non-Spanish referee would be preferable for Real Madrid's upcoming Champions League match against Bayern Munich, underscoring the ongoing issues with officiating.
