Parkinson Insists Wrexham Still Has Hope

Phil Parkinson expressed his disappointment following Wrexham's 2-0 defeat to Birmingham City, viewing it as a missed chance to narrow the gap to the Championship play-off spots. With goals from Carlos Vicente and Christoph Klarer in the second half, Birmingham secured a straightforward victory over the Red Dragons, leaving Wrexham four points behind the top six with just four games remaining this season.

Parkinson pointed out that two defensive errors proved detrimental to his team's chances, though he remains optimistic about their ability to finish in a play-off position this season. "We came here today expecting Birmingham to play direct and go into the front quickly, which they did at Ipswich, and we were prepared for that," he noted.

Defensive Issues Costly for Wrexham

Reflecting on the match, Parkinson assessed the team's performance, particularly emphasizing their struggles in defense. "I thought the first half was competitive, and we handled those situations well. However, we lacked a bit of patience when we had possession in the final third and made poor decisions at crucial moments," he said.

The hosts dominated large portions of the match, creating numerous scoring opportunities while Wrexham failed to challenge goalkeeper James Beadle effectively. Birmingham recorded eight shots on target compared to Wrexham's inability to register any meaningful attempts, leading to an expected goals (xG) statistic of 1.55 for the Blues versus just 0.08 for Wrexham. Additionally, Birmingham had nearly four times as many touches in the opposition box, with 22 compared to Wrexham's six.

Parkinson highlighted the need for improvement in offensive connectivity. "In the first half, we didn't connect well in the top third of the pitch. We managed to switch the play effectively and got Issa [Kabore] into some promising positions. We grew into the game; however, we need to make the right passes and maintain composure in that area to convert possession into chances."

Optimism Despite Setback

Despite the setback at St Andrew's, Wrexham remains in contention for a play-off spot, sitting four points behind sixth-placed Hull City with four matches left in the regular season. Parkinson emphasized the resilience of his squad, stating, "We haven't had many back-to-back defeats, and although this week has been tough, we are not down and out yet."

He added, "The positive takeaway is that we've come to Birmingham, a team that was significantly ahead of us last year in points, and we are currently above them in the league. We still have a chance at the play-offs."

While some may doubt Wrexham’s prospects, Parkinson insists his team is focused and determined. "People might write us off, and I can understand that perspective. But within the dressing room, we believe in ourselves, and we're just one win away from getting back on track."
