Harry Maguire has been handed an additional one-game ban following his red card against Bournemouth on March 20, ruling him out of Manchester United's crucial trip to Chelsea on April 18. The suspension stems from a charge of improper conduct after Maguire swore at the fourth official, Matt Donohue, in the aftermath of his dismissal during the match. The ban adds to the suspension he was already serving for the red card itself, and he will now miss another key fixture for the club.
Maguire’s actions, which included using abusive language towards the official, have drawn significant attention. The England defender admitted to the charge and was also fined £30,000. As a result of this additional suspension, Manchester United will be without both Maguire and Lisandro Martinez for their upcoming match against Chelsea, leaving them with limited options in defense.
The Incident: Maguire's Outburst After Red Card
Maguire’s red card against Bournemouth was issued after he fouled Evanilson to deny a clear goalscoring opportunity. The decision led to a penalty from which the Cherries equalized in added time. However, it was Maguire’s reaction that led to the additional ban. As he left the field, he directed offensive comments at the fourth official, saying, "You're a joke, you're all a f****** joke," as confirmed in the FA’s written reasons.
Despite the charge, Maguire insisted that he did not insult the official but admitted to saying, "it is a f****** joke." The FA charged him for acting in an "improper manner" and using "abusive and insulting words" following his dismissal. This charge was issued on April 1, and Maguire accepted responsibility for his actions.
Manchester United's Defensive Crisis Ahead of Chelsea Clash
With Maguire and Lisandro Martinez both unavailable for the Chelsea match, Manchester United finds itself in a difficult situation. Martinez was sent off during the Leeds defeat for pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair, adding to the defensive woes. The Red Devils’ center-back options are now limited, with Matthijs de Ligt still sidelined due to a back injury.

The club’s options in defense are thin. Young players like Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are available, but their lack of experience has been evident at times this season. Another option is Luke Shaw, who could step in, but the physical challenge of facing Joao Pedro could push manager Michael Carrick to consider a more traditional choice. Alternatively, Casemiro has played in defense in the past, but moving him from midfield would further deplete United’s already thin options in that area.
In a more unexpected move, Carrick may look to youth, with 18-year-old Godwill Kukonki an option. Kukonki has been included in several matchday squads under previous manager Ruben Amorim and could be called upon if needed. However, Carrick will need to weigh his options carefully as he seeks to bounce back from Manchester United’s first home defeat under his leadership.
