Lionel Messi and Inter Miami visited the White House in a star-studded ceremony celebrating the club’s victory in last year’s MLS Cup. During the event, Messi presented President Donald Trump with a bejeweled pink soccer ball, symbolizing the Argentinian superstar’s impact on the team and the sport in the United States. The ceremony highlighted both athletic excellence and the growing influence of soccer in America.

A Historic MLS Celebration

Inter Miami captured the Major League Soccer title in December, defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps. Messi, who joined the club in mid-2023, was named MLS MVP for the second consecutive season, cementing his role as a transformative player in the league. President Trump praised Messi’s achievements, noting the unique pressure on the superstar to succeed immediately and lauding his decision to join Miami.

The event also featured other Inter Miami stars, including Luis Suarez, Tadeo Allende, and Rodrigo De Paul. MLS Commissioner Don Garber attended alongside Andrew Giuliani, head of the White House World Cup task force, while retired baseball star Alex Rodriguez and members of Trump’s cabinet were also present. Inter Miami became the first MLS team to be invited to the White House during Trump’s tenure, highlighting the growing recognition of soccer in the U.S.

Politics and Soccer: A Subtle Intersection

While the ceremony primarily celebrated Inter Miami’s success, Trump touched on political topics, including Iran, Venezuela, and trade matters, while keeping his remarks directed at Messi mostly sports-focused. Referencing his Doral golf course, Trump thanked Messi for choosing Miami and praised his talent, calling him “hot and talented and a great person.”

Despite international tensions, including conflicts involving Iran, Messi remains focused on soccer. The 38-year-old continues to lead Argentina and is expected to compete in the upcoming 2026 World Cup hosted across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Trump even compared Messi to Brazilian legend Pelé during the ceremony, asking the crowd who they thought was better.

Inter Miami’s Vision and Legacy

Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas emphasized the club’s mission to elevate American soccer: “We can play with the big boys, we can play with the heavyweights. Our league can be one of the top leagues in the world.” He praised the team’s ability to dream, persevere, and overcome obstacles, expressing hope that this White House celebration would not be the last for the club.

This marked Messi’s first White House visit. He had been invited by the Biden administration in 2025 to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom but could not attend due to scheduling conflicts. Inter Miami will continue their U.S. tour, playing D.C. United in an upcoming MLS match, as fans celebrate both the team’s victory and Messi’s ongoing impact on American soccer.
