Matildas Stars Condemn Football Officials Over ‘Deeply Disrespectful’ Decision Ahead of Asian Cup

Football Australia has been accused of attempting to curb criticism from former Matildas players through the launch of a new membership scheme that places limits on public comments about the governing body.

On the eve of Australia hosting the Women's Asian Cup, the organisation is facing strong backlash from trailblazers of the national team over the introduction of ‘Matildas FC’.

The program offers complimentary match tickets to former players.

Previously, ex-players were granted free access to international fixtures without needing to enrol in any membership platform.

However, the rollout has angered many former Matildas, who believe the attached code of conduct effectively prevents them from openly criticising the sport’s administrators.

Matildas Alumni, the body representing past national team players, has raised concerns about the conditions they must accept in order to join Matildas FC and receive complimentary tickets.

“The imposed code of conduct tied to this platform operates as a silencing tool, limiting Alumni from expressing opinions that may be critical of FA,” a Matildas Alumni spokesperson said.

“Alumni are forced into a corner: either decline membership and lose access to benefits, or join and give up freedom of expression. Both options undermine dignity and independence.”

Matildas FC’s rules state that members must “refrain from making public comments and/or statements that bring or may bring Football Australia into disrepute.”

The policy further warns that failure to follow these guidelines “may result in loss of benefits or termination of membership.”

In response, Football Australia said its code of conduct simply outlines standard expectations for participants.

“The code of conduct functions in the same way as the terms and conditions of any membership program,” a Football Australia spokesperson said.

“It sets out basic responsibilities linked to the benefits of Matildas FC and Socceroos FC membership.

“This is a normal feature of membership programs, and there are appropriate channels available for members to raise concerns directly with Football Australia.”

Further frustration among former players stems from the fact that Matildas FC is restricted to more than 200 ‘A’ internationals, excluding many players who represented Australia with so-called ‘B’ caps.

A total of 34 players earned ‘B’ caps after appearing in international matches for Australia between 1978 and 2004.

Their contributions were formally recognised by Football Australia in 2022, and these players had regularly been provided with complimentary tickets in recent years.

However, ‘B’ internationals have not been invited to join Matildas FC, leaving many — most of whom have already booked travel and accommodation for group-stage matches — without access to tickets.

Matildas Alumni claims the affected players only became aware of the decision to remove their privileges within the past month, despite assurances given in July last year by Asian Cup organisers that they would receive the same treatment as ‘A’ internationals.

“For nearly 50 years, these women have been pioneers of the Matildas — representing Australia with pride at a time when there was no pay, limited recognition and very little institutional backing,” the Matildas Alumni spokesperson said.

“They laid the groundwork for the national team through sacrifice and resilience.

“To now deny them complimentary tickets for a home tournament, after many years of access to Matildas matches in Australia, is not just inconsistent — it is profoundly disrespectful.”

Football Australia confirmed that only ‘A’ internationals were eligible to join Matildas FC but declined to specify when ‘B’ internationals were informed that they would no longer receive complimentary tickets.

“The Matildas FC and Socceroos FC membership program is open to players officially recognised as Matildas and Socceroos. This classification applies only to those who have represented Australia in ‘A’ internationals,” a Football Australia spokesperson said.
