Galatasaray Slams Referees, Accuses Them of 'Malice'

Galatasaray has launched a fierce attack on Turkish referees, accusing them of harboring "evil inside" after their recent 3-0 victory over Fenerbahce. The heated comments, made via social media during the match, are part of a growing frustration between the club and match officials, further fueled by ongoing tensions with the Turkish Football Federation (TFF). This clash, coming on the heels of the suspension of relations with the TFF, has added to the controversy surrounding refereeing in Turkish football.

Accusations Amid Fenerbahce Victory

Galatasaray’s statement was issued on social media at half-time while they were leading 1-0. The club highlighted two penalty decisions that they felt were unjustly ignored, even as they were leading at the break. They expressed their anger in two posts on X (formerly Twitter), claiming that the referees' actions were not just mistakes, but part of a deliberate plan with "evil inside." The club’s defiant message declared, "We won’t be silent, and in the end, the good ones will win again."

Tensions Between Clubs and Referees Continue

The issue of refereeing in the Turkish Super Lig has been a major talking point over recent years. Galatasaray’s comments are not the first signs of growing unrest. Last year, Turkish referees were involved in several controversies, including physical confrontations and accusations of bias. Notably, MKE Ankaragucu’s president punched a referee, and former Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho faced sanctions for questioning refereeing impartiality. Additionally, several teams have protested by walking off the pitch in response to questionable refereeing.

Suspension of Relations with Turkish Football Federation

The accusation from Galatasaray comes just days after club president Dursun Aydin Ozbek made a bold announcement regarding the club's stance towards the Turkish Football Federation (TFF). Ozbek declared that Galatasaray was suspending all relations with the TFF under its current leadership. This move follows the TFF’s decision to suspend 149 referees after a betting scandal was uncovered, further fueling the club’s discontent with the governing body.
